Business fears delay recycling directive
(The Birmingham Post Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Business worries over the EU directive on the recycling of waste electric and electronic equipment have delayed its launch in the UK.
The DTI has announced a review of the cost implications to business of the WEEE directive, which lays out rules on reducing the impact on the environment from such items as fridges, televisions and PC monitors during their life times and when they become waste.
It makes producers of the goods responsible for most of the cost of their collection and disposal.
The Government is now trying to maximise the environmental benefits associated with the directive while squeezing the cost to business.
The review will be followed by a full consultation exercise this spring before the main provisions are put into UK law.
Cathy Davies of the European Information Centre (EIC), based at Birmingham Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said: "The deferral of the WEEE Directive implementation will have implications for local authorities.
"In advance of the WEEE regulations introducing producer responsibility for the disposal, the DTI will meet any costs to local authorities of arranging the treatments required for any televisions and PC monitors containing cathode ray tubes and fluorescent lamps.
"They are collected separately and sent to a hazardous waste landfill".
