Cuba receives 12 railroad engines and first 80 buses from China

(EFE Ingles Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Havana, Jan 9 (EFE).- Cuba took delivery of 12 railroad engines and the first 80 out of a total 1,000 buses purchased from China for some $100 million, part of the island's growing trade with the Asian nation.

The official newspaper "Granma" said Monday that the new 2,500 hp railroad engines will be the most modern and efficient in the country's railway system.

Also rolling onto the Caribbean island are the first 80 buses of a lot of 1,000, of which 700 made by Yutong will be added to Cuba's long-distance transport services this year.

Cost of the financial operation securing these 1,000 buses is more than $100 million, "Granma" said.

Trade between Cuba and China in 2004 reached $524 million, of which $330 million were exports from China and $194 million were Cuban sales, the paper said.

China has become Cuba's second largest trade partner after Venezuela. EFE
