MCILROY SMASHES RECORD TO QUALIFY FOR GAMES
(New Zealand Press Association Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Wellington, Jan 8 NZPA - Wellington athlete Kate McIlroy has qualified for the Commonwealth Games with a remarkable national record-breaking performance in the 3000m steeplechase at Papakura yesterday.
The women's world mountain running champion stunned onlookers at Massey Park with a brilliant time of nine minutes 51.39 seconds in her first attempt at the gruelling event.
She smashed Fiona Crombie's New Zealand record by 10sec and was delighted at her achievement.
``I'm pretty rapt. To go under the Games standard by 15 seconds and break the New Zealand record as well is a bit of a bonus,'' she told The Herald on Sunday newspaper.
``I have never done a steeplechase before and only practised the water jump for the first time on Thursday.
``I thought that I would do 10 minutes but I didn't think that I would go that fast.''
McIlroy will still try to qualify in her specialist 5000m for the Melbourne Games in March but believed she probably needed another winter's training to reach the standard of 15min 25sec.
