Soccer: Japan to meet Saudi Arabia on March 1 in Asian Cup q'fier+

(Japan Economic Newswire Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)TOKYO, Jan. 6_(Kyodo) _ Japan Football Association technical director Kozo Tashima confirmed Friday that Japan will face Saudi Arabia in an away match on March 1 in the preliminary round of the 2007 Asian Cup tournament.

Japan notified the Asian Football Confederation and Saudi Arabia's football association of their intention to play the match on the day designated by FIFA, soccer's world governing body, for international friendlies.

The AFC had decided, if all the parties involved agreed, to change the date for preliminary round matches to Sept. 1 to take into consideration the training schedules for countries taking part in this year's FIFA World Cup finals.

But the JFA rejected the idea as the fixtures for this year's J-League matches had already been determined.
