Internet Now Equals Newspapers as First Choice for News among U.S. CEOs

SAN DIEGO --(Business Wire)-- Sept. 6, 2006 -- An equal number of CEOs turn to online news sources as their primary form of news compared to newspapers, according to the latest Vistage Confidence Index, a quarterly measure of economic, market and industry trends.

Thirty-one percent of nearly 2,000 CEOs responding to the survey ranked online sources as their primary source of news, compared to an equal 31 percent who ranked newspapers first. Twenty-two percent reported that television remained their primary news source.

"Much has been made of younger audiences turning away from traditional media for news, but clearly that trend is reaching the executive ranks," said Dan Barnett, Chief Operating Officer of Vistage International, the world's largest CEO membership organization. "There's no doubt that news organizations will continue to enhance their online capabilities to meet this demand."

According to a recent study by the Pew Internet & American Life Project, more than 50 million Americans per day used the Internet as their primary news source in 2005, up from 27 million in 2002.

about the Vistage Confidence Index

U.S. small and mid-sized businesses represent the most vital component of the nation's economy. This sector creates 75 percent of all new jobs and generates 50 percent of all national revenue. The opinions of these business leaders provide a clear snapshot of current economic, market, and industry trends and demonstrate their plans for growth over the next 12 months. These insights provide a leading indicator for employment, capital expenditure, sales and revenue trends.

The Q3 2006 Vistage Confidence Index is a compilation of responses from 1,939 CEOs of small- to mid-sized companies, surveyed August 16-24, with a margin of error of 1.9 percentage points. The Vistage Confidence Index is the only comprehensive report of their opinions and projections.
