Samsung to launch cordless MP3 player

(InfoWorld Daily Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. is launching one of the world's first MP3 portable music players using Bluetooth technology to replace cables.

"As far as we know, we're the first to offer a Bluetooth-enabled MP3 player," a Samsung spokesman said Friday at the IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin. The phone's release date was not provided.

Embedded Bluetooth technology will allow users to connect their headphones to their MP3 players over the airwaves, thus eliminating the need for cabled ear plugs, which users find annoying.

The YP-T9 will cost 249 (US$320) in the 2G-byte version and 279 in the 4G-byte version.

Bluetooth headsets will cost between 20 and 30.

The new Samsung cordless MP3 music player, however, will not be available in Germany, according to the company spokesman. "The Bluetooth headset is a bit heavy," he said. "A Bluetooth-enabled portable media player that costs 300, but offers only 2G bytes could be a tough sale against an iPod with a whole lot more storage for the same price."
