Verizon Wireless enhances network capacity at Southern Illinois University

(Tele.com Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Network capacity at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, in the US, has been enhanced by over 50% by US wireless network operator Verizon Wireless, a joint venture of Verizon Communications (NYSE: VZ) and Vodafone (NYSE and LSE: VOD).

Verizon Wireless improved capacity prior to the university's 'move-in' day starting 18 August, with most of the 20,000 students expected to return to campus this weekend. The network has been prepared to handle the increase in wireless activity expected from college students and their families, using their wireless handsets to keep in contact.

The operator has activated a temporary cell site and upgraded the permanent area cell sites which provided network service to the campus and nearby area in order to manage the predicted increase in network activity. The improvements will allow more users to make calls via their wireless handsets simultaneously, send and receive text and picture messages and also download games and ringtones.

Verizon Wireless has positioned its temporary cell site, also known as a Cell on Light Truck (COLT), near the entrance to the new softball stadium on campus, providing a mobile cell site to improve wireless capacity in that area.
