I-T returns boost India Post's coffers

(The Times of India Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) CHENNAI: Officials at the business development directorate (BDD) of India Post are smiling with an air of satisfaction primarily for three reasons.

First, they could convince the I-T department that the BDD could effectively make the ubiquitous post office an outlet to ensure easy and speedy filing of I-T returns.

Second, their proposal, which was liked by I-T department, has ensured a modest revenue of Rs 3.58 crore to India Post.

And third, within a short time-frame, they could train and mould their existing staff to ensure hassle-free filing of the I-T returns.

A BDD official said a total number of 3,57,276 IT returns were filed through 2,200 post offices in the country.

"We received the returns for six days between July 26 and 31. If we had started earlier, we would have received higher number of returns" the official said.

On the first day, India Post received 8,744 I-T returns followed by 30,109 returns on the second day. On the third and fourth days, it got 63,900 and 73,922 returns respectively.

"On July 30 (Sunday), we received only 23,527 returns," he said. Highest number of returns poured in on the last day at 157,074. I-T department will pay India Post Rs 100 per return filed at its counters.
