PLDT unit investing P360M in new call center in Ortigas

(Philippine Daily Inquirer Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) A SUBSIDIARY OF EPLDT INC., THE CALL center arm of Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co., is spending P360 million to put up a call center in the Ortigas central business district.

The call center of ePLDT Ventus Inc., which can host 823 agents, will offer financial and market support services to PLDT, Smart Communications and third-party clients.

ePLDT Ventus Inc. applied for incentives with the Board of Investments for its new project, which company officials said also included back up facilities with 46 seats in Quezon City and another one in Makati with 245 seats.

The company is eyeing third party clients that are based in the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

In a related development, the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions said 10 local information and technology-enabled firms were embarking on a sales mission to get a bigger piece of the American market in October.

Trade Assistant Secretary Felicitas Agoncillo-Reyes said the mission would showcase the local firms outsourcing services in customer relations management, procurement, finance and accounting, human resources, data transcription, design and engineering and even animation.

Reyes, who is also Citem chief, said the mission would cover the cities of Chicago, New York and Miami.

She said the United States, which represents 60 percent of total global BPO spending, remained the countrys main market for outsourced business processes and contact center services.

Reyes said the US presented new opportunities to local BPO firms since its total core insurance BPO was projected to hit $3 billion in 2006 while HR work was seen to rise to $42 billion in 2008.

We want to help small enterprises in the BPO space who want to (work with) with international partners, she said. These enterprises are going to be crucial players in the knowledge-based economy and the US mission can provide as a (catalyst for partnership).

In the local call center sector, alone, revenues have grown to $1.1 billion while employment reached 112,000 in about half a decade since the boom began.
