-- West Craven High School is now accepting applications for its second annual athletics hall of fame induction. The application deadline is July 31.

-- Come and see exciting professional baseball action without having to drive when the Kinston Indians play the Lynchburg Hillcats. -- The New Bern Recreation and Parks is holding registration for Inner City Baseball and T-Ball for players ages 5 to 12 year olds. -- East Carolina University is offering a variety of baseball camps this summer. Registration and all camps will be at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
Session 5 is a college prospect camp from July 23 to 26 and is open for players ages 14 to rising seniors in high school. The cost is $425 for boarders and $350 for day campers. Registration begins at 4 p.m. on July 23. The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on July 24 and 25.

-- Applications are now being evaluated for The Ten Star All-Star Summer Basketball Camp. The camp is by invitation only. Boys and girls ages 10 to 19 are eligible to apply. Past participants include: Michael Jordan, Tim Duncan, Vince Carter, Jerry Stackhouse, Grant Hill and Antwan Jamison. Players from 50 states and 18 foreign countries attended the 2005 camp.
College basketball scholarships are possible for players selected to the All-American Team. Camp locations include: Hickory; Prescott, Ariz; Thousand Oaks, Calif.; Sterling, Colo.; Bridgeport, Conn.; Babson Park, Fla.; Gainesville, Ga.; Champaign, Ill.; North Manchester, Ind.; Towson, Md.; Ypsilanti, Mich.; Glassboro, N.J.; Schenectady, N.Y.; Lebanon, Tenn.; Commerce, Texas; Blacksburg, Va.; Lyndonville, Vt. and Beloit, Wisc.

-- The first ever 3-v-3 Above the Rim Shootout will be held August 26 and 27 at the Twin Rivers Mall. The tournament features a 3-on-3 format and the tournament registration will be held only by mail no later than Aug. 12. The team is $60 for four players, with the fourth being the team's substitution and the fee has to accompany the registration form. Teams registering after this deadline will encounter an additional $20 late fee.
The age brackets in the tournament are males and females, 8 to 12 years old, 13 to 15 years old, 16 to 18 years old and 19 and up. Age verification will be done upon registration with birth certificate on Aug. 26.
Registration will start at 8 a.m. on Aug. 26 with the games scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Games will be played no later than 7 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.
-- Registration for the 2006-07 YES Foundation of Eastern North Carolina Craven-Brinson Basketball Youth/Young Adult Basketball League has now begun. This registration period shall continue through October 31. For the first time there will be separate boys and girls divisions, and a young adult men's and women's league.
We will be making positive changes to the Brinson Basketball League including a name change, to the Craven-Brinson Youth/Young Adult Basketball League. Age divisions will be the following: Boys and girls separate divisions 6-8 (instructional), 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, 15-16, 17-18 and young adults 19-24 (men and women). We will also have interleague play with the area leagues. On announcement, we will have teams playing some exhibition youth games at local high school games during halftime.
Registration forms have been mailed to the previous participants of the league and those can be returned to the league office via mail or in person to the YES Foundation at 1912 Trent Boulevard, New Bern, NC 28560. We will also be setting up registration tables at various outlets during following months. We encourage you to look for those tables in the next couple of months. At that time, we plan to have a credit card processing machine that allows parents and participants to use their credit cards at those retail sites.

Click "Register Now" on that page and follow the instructions to complete the registration process. Boating
-- The World's Fastest Offshore Boats will be competing at the 5th annual Fountain Superboat International Grand Prix on Sunday, Aug. 6 in Washington, N.C.
On Saturday, Aug. 5 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., there will be over 100 classic cars competing for Top Honors, sponsored by Down East Rods and Classic Cars Club. This will take place at the Race Village, located at the Fountain Factory. The evening will culminate with a concert by Confederate Railroad. Call (252) 975-7071 for ticket information.
Racing fans will get a taste of what real horsepower sounds and feels like Sunday when the first boat race begins at 1 p.m. and may be watched from the shore of Wichard's Beach.
Camps
-- There will be a Havelock summer day camp for children ages 6 to 12. Regular camp hours are Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The new extended camp hours are Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Session four is July 31 to Aug. 11. The first child for regular-hours camp is $85 per session and $125 for extended hours. Additional family members are $75 per session and $105 per session. Call 444-6429 to register. Space is limited.
Fencing
-- The Art and Science of Fencing resumes at the West New Bern Recreation Center on Pine tree Drive on Wednesday, Sept. 6. A fall and winter sport, fencing appeals to people ages 10 through adult. This is a sport for slender, active people who appreciate the opportunity to win or lose on their own ability. There is no team to fall back on. Salle New Bern is a member club of the U.S. Fencer's Association, which is the national governing body for the sports in the U.S. For more information, contact coach John Wollerton at (252) 637-1891.
Fishing
-- A new King of the Cape will be crowned and awarded $10,000 at the Fifth Annual King of the Cape Classic King Mackerel Tournament, to be held July 21 and 22 at Southport Watersports in the Old Southport Yacht Basin. In addition to the king mackerel competition, the tournament festivities include a "King of the Nets" cast net competition on Friday during the registration and captain's meetings. All events will be conducted in the parking lot and on the deck of Southport Watersports at 120 Yacht Basin Street in Southport.
Beginning with the opening of final registration at 3 p.m. on July 21, there will be a "King of The Nets" cast net competition, with divisions for adults, teens and juniors. The cast net competition will conclude along with the final registration at 9 p.m. There will be captains meetings at 5 and 8 p.m.
On Saturday morning, July 22, the king mackerel fishing begins at 6 a.m. The scales will open promptly at 3 p.m. and all contestants, with fish to weigh, must be in line by 5 p.m. The awards ceremony will begin at 8 p.m.

-- The New Bern Recreation and Parks is conducting registration for Pop Warner Football and Cheer for the 2006 season. Registration is held at Stanley White Recreation Center and West New Bern Recreation Center. Ages are 7 to 12, weight restrictions do apply. To participate in Pop Warner Football and Cheer each child needs to have an original birth certificate, a complete 2005-2006 Report Card (not available until the end of school year) and a 2006 physical exam. -- Youth Flag Football Program for boys and girls ages 6 to 12 is being sponsored by the New Bern Recreation Department's Athletic Division. This fun and exciting program will encourage teamwork, sportsmanship and physical fitness. Registration began May 1. Parents need to come by the West New Bern Recreation Center or the Stanley White Recreation Center to fill out a registration form. It costs only $5 to register. -- The 2006 West Craven High School Eagle Football Camp will be held from July 24 to July 26 at Eagle Stadium. The time of the camp is 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. each day.

-- The first ever Beast of the East Middle School Football Jamboree is coming to Craven County. This event will take place at West Craven Middle School on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 10 a.m.
The jamboree will be a continuous scrimmage between eight teams consisting of schools from Craven, Lenoir, Pitt and Beaufort counties. The middle schools involved are H.J. MacDonald, Havelock, West Craven, Savannah, Woodington, C.F. Eppes, E.B. Aycock and P.S. Jones.
Under controlled conditions, each team will scrimmage each other offensively and defensively. Prior to the event starting, an opening ceremony will take place to introduce the team, coaches and the tossing of the ball.

-- The Strike Zone and River Bend Golf and Country Club are sponsoring a bolf tournament fund-raiser on July 22 to benefit Special Olympics Craven County. The format is 3-person teams and the teams play 9 holes of golf and bowl three games. Total of bowling score and golf score determines winners. Space is limited so sign up today. -- Area golfers no longer have to leave the kids at home when it comes to playing their favorite game. Effective July 1, the "Sound of Freedom" Golf Course aboard MCAS Cherry Point has recently announced the implementation of all new rates for kids ages 6 thru 17.
The campaign's purpose is to promote more family golf by making it affordable for parents to bring their kids out to the course.
MCAS Cherry Point has long been known for their comprehensive variety of junior programs to include: Hook A Kid on Golf, Junior Golf Clinics, the Eastern NC Junior Golf League, the annual Parent/Child Golf Tournament, plus, their weekly "Quality Family Time (QFT) Sundays" which offers reduced rates for the wives and kids.
At the beginning of July, any junior golfer between the ages of 6 thru 17 can now play the course for only $3 greens fee for 9 holes and $6 for 18 holes. Plus, they'll offer junior riding cart rates of $3 for 9 holes and $6 for 18 up to 15 years of age.

-- The North Carolina Watermelon Festival 5K Run and Walk will be on Saturday, August 5, in Murfreesboro. Race-day registration begins at 8:30 a.m. on the lawn of Murfreesboro Baptist Church (200 W. Main St.). The race begins at 10 a.m. The first 100 registered participants are guaranteed an official race shirt. Cost is $15. Saltwater Fishing
-- If you enjoy fishing, come join The East Carolina Saltwater Fishing Club. We meet at 7 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month at The Famous Subs and Pizza located at 2210 Neuse Blvd. in New Bern.
Membership is $30 per year and boat ownership is not required as we need crewmembers also. At each meeting we bring in speakers to bring us up to date on the latest fishing methods and equipment. We hold nine tournaments each year fishing both inshore and off shore for Stripers, Cobia, Spanish, Dolphin, King Mackeral and other species. Soccer
-- Team registrations are now being accepted for the following Central Maryland Soccer Association Fall 2006 Tournaments taking place in the greater Baltimore metropolitan area.
The fifth annual Baltimore Challenge Cup, a pre-season tournament which will take place over Labor Day Weekend on Sept. 1 through 4; and the 10th annual Columbus Classic on Oct. 7 and 8.

-- The New Bern Area Soccer Association is now registering players for the Fall Recreational Soccer season. The season's games will start Sept. 9. A child must be born on or before July 31, 2002 to play and if your child has never played with NBASA before please bring verification of age. Registration fees for Under 5 and 6 age bracket players is $46, Under 7 and 8 is $50, Under 9 and 10 is $60, and Under 11 and above $62. Uniforms may be purchased for $24 when registering your child. Registration forms may be printed from our Web site or picked up at the office. Registrations with fees may be submitted at the soccer office located at 403-B Airport Rd, New Bern or by mail. Summer office hours are between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Tony Pereira has an extensive background in professional coaching and in playing competitive tennis. He has over 25 years of experience as an instructor and is USPTR certified. His background includes instruction at every level, from coaching highly competitive teams to working as a tennis pro at several outstanding resorts. As a player, Tony won numerous individual and team championships, and remains one of the top players in the area.

Volleyball
-- West Craven High School presents the Lady Eagles Volleyball camp to be held at the West Craven Middle School gym. The camp will run from July 24 through 27 and is open for upcoming 7th to 9th graders. The first 36 kids will be accepted. Space is limited, so advance registration is recommended.
Applications must be turned in by July 21. Camp will run from 9 a.m. to noon for drills and skill development and from 6 to 8 p.m. for scrimmaging and offensive and defensive strategies.
The cost of the camp is $75 and includes a T-shirt and meal on the last day. Campers should bring tennis shoes, athletic attire and kneepads.
Applications can be picked up at West Craven High School. Checks and money orders should be made payable to West Craven Women's Volleyball.
