Weather Predict and Florida State University to Provide the National Weather Service Super Ensemble Hurricane Forecasts
RALEIGH, N.C. --(Business Wire)-- June 15, 2006 -- Weather Predict announced today it has reached agreement with the National Weather Service to make available hurricane forecasts from the patented "Super Ensemble(TM)" weather forecasting technology to the National Hurricane Center for the 2006 hurricane season. The company is also working with the National Weather Service toward an agreement that will make the Super Ensemble hurricane forecasts available to the National Hurricane Center for subsequent hurricane seasons.
Super Ensemble hurricane forecasts are important tools that the National Hurricane Center has used over the past few years in its forecasts of the intensity and track of hurricanes. This forecasting technology achieved industry-leading accuracy in the 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons.
Formed in 2000, Weather Predict has the exclusive license to the Super Ensemble technology, which was patented by Florida State University. Weather Predict will provide its forecasts to the National Hurricane Center, and in addition, scientists from Weather Predict, who were part of the original development of the Super Ensemble technology, will work with Florida State University to run and deliver an additional forecast to the National Hurricane Center for the 2006 hurricane season.
"Super Ensemble hurricane forecasts have been valuable in National Hurricane Center efforts to track the intensity and direction of tropical storms and hurricanes," said Brig. Gen. DL Johnson, USAF (ret.), Director of NOAA's National Weather Service. "We look forward to having the continued benefit of the Super Ensemble hurricane forecasts as we enter what is anticipated to be a very active 2006 hurricane season."
"We are pleased that our Super Ensemble hurricane forecasts are useful to the National Hurricane Center in their efforts to protect lives and property in the event of hurricanes and to have reached this agreement to deliver these forecasts," said Jayant Khadilkar, Chief Executive Officer of Weather Predict.
"We would like to thank Weather Predict for their cooperation and facilitation of our efforts to meet the needs of the National Weather Service during this hurricane season," said Lawrence Abele, provost and executive vice president for Academic Affairs of Florida State University. "They have been great partners in ensuring that Super Ensemble forecasts reach the people and entities who need it to protect life and property."
