Web site offers veterans information on identity theft prevention

(The Star (Shelby, NC)(KRT) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Jun. 10--In response to the recent loss of data by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the Better Business Bureau has established a Web site, www.military.bbb.org., to inform veterans on ways to monitor their credit and prevent thieves from stealing their identity.

"This loss of personal records can leave veterans feeling exposed to fraud and identity theft with no way to stop it," said Jonathan Richardson, communications director for the Better Business Bureau of Northwest Florida. "However, there are proactive steps potential victims can take now to reduce their risk of becoming a victim later."

At the site, veterans can place a fraud alert on their credit report or order a free credit report. There's also a special section created for each branch of the military, as well as links to the Federal Trade Commission and Department of Veterans Affairs.

The U. S. Better Business Bureau system is working with the U.S. military to encourage its personnel and their family members to use the programs and materials of the BBB system, as well as to partner with local Better Business Bureaus to use BBB programs, services and materials as part of a formal program to assist Service members and their families with a variety of consumer-related issues. The services on these pages will be increasingly tailored to support the needs of military personnel, their families and retirees.

The BBB Military Line program is designed to educate and inform military personnel about ways in which they can protect their financial interests, consume wisely and safeguard their financial future.
