Get up to speed on latest dating trend

(La Crosse Tribune (Wisconsin)(KRT) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Jun. 11--Dating isn't that hard. All you have to be is funny, charming, sexy, intelligent and confident. There's only one catch. You have six minutes to prove you're all those things.

Last month, I speed dated. Here's how it works: You meet a bunch of different guys and talk to each one for six minutes. If you can still stand the person when the timer rings, maybe you'll meet for coffee or drinks.

Speed dating is dating for the new millennium. We live busy lives. Devoting six minutes to each bachelor might sound flippant. But it's good time management. In an hour and a half, I met 12 guys. Some were old enough to be my grandfather, but they still count.

Whoever said "Showing up is half the battle" was talking about dating. There's always some excuse not to date. You'll miss your favorite TV show. You need to clean dishes, learn how to speak Italian, rearrange your file cabinets.

But one night, a

miracle occurred. Rachel Peterson, owner of Six Minute Match, rounded up a dozen single men and put them in one room. Plus, the event

featured pool and an open bar. So I found myself standing in the lobby of the Stoney Creek Inn in Onalaska, Wis., ready to meet my dream man. I met a friend at the event, for support, but she crumbled under pressure. She left before the festivities began.

Two sisters perched in an undisclosed hiding spot, they later told me, to check out the men before forking over the cash. Ultimately, they liked what they saw and invested 10 bucks each.

We waited for Peterson to give directions. Few of us looked at each other or initiated conversation. We were saving all the good stuff for the date, I think.

I did most of the talking on my mini-dates. I met some great guys. But by the end, I had lost my voice and my will to go forward. Speed dating was like Disney World -- exciting but exhausting.

Speed dating might not be the most romantic story to tell your grandchildren, but it's realistic. No guy is going to recite poetry under your balcony, at least not by choice. You'll never dance the last tango in Paris. You'll never dance the first tango in Paris.

But on the second Tuesday of every month, around 6:30 p.m., you can head over to Stoney Creek Inn, drink a Corona and meet some good people. For more information, call (608) 399-1027, or

P.S. If you're an avid dater, give me a call. I'm writing an article about dating in the La Crosse area. That means Internet dating, meeting people at bars, dating people at work, church, etc.
