PortalPlayer Preface Technology Supported by Leading Manufacturers: Quanta and Compal; Designs Showcase the Benefits of Windows Vista and Windows SideShow-Enabled Gadgets

TAIPEI, Taiwan --(Business Wire)-- June 7, 2006 -- PortalPlayer Inc. (Nasdaq:PLAY), a leading supplier of semiconductors, firmware and software for personal media players and secondary display-enabled notebook computers, today at COMPUTEX TAIPEI, the largest IT tradeshow in Asia, announced support of the Preface(TM) personal media display (PMD) platform by Quanta Computer and Compal, the two leading notebook original design manufacturers (ODMs). Preface is a secondary processor and display subsystem that allows notebook manufacturers to take advantage of the mobility built into the Windows Vista operating system and Windows SideShow.

Preface can be implemented in the notebook lid or in detachable version docked into the notebook supporting QVGA or QCIF+ resolutions for Always On access to gadgets displaying personal data like calendars, contacts and schedules or entertainment such as photo slide shows, video clips or music. Not only can these displays improve the usability of the notebook, but they also provide a unique platform for product differentiation, branding and personalization.

"Preface is a platform for innovation, enabling new ways of viewing and accessing key information and entertainment content on the notebook," said Michael Maia, vice president and general manager of the Personal Media Display division of PortalPlayer. "Our partners Quanta and Compal are enthusiastic about how a secondary color display with multimedia functions can improve the notebook as a mobile lifestyle device."

"This is an ideal opportunity for us to show our expertise in product differentiation," said Michael Wang, Chief Operating Officer at Quanta. "With Preface, we offer PC manufacturers a unique opportunity to seize the benefits of Windows Vista in the mobile environment."

PortalPlayer has been working with Microsoft and its ODM partners to bring first-generation Windows SideShow and Preface personal media displays to on-the-go consumers at the time of the Windows Vista launch.

"PortalPlayer has provided a complete subsystem allowing us to rapidly create a variety of OEM-specific designs that feature a rich multimedia experience," said a Compal company spokesperson. "PortalPlayer's unique platform gives us great confidence in pioneering the personal media display category and in providing mobile Windows Vista solutions that consumers will enjoy."

About Preface

Preface is a power-efficient, complete subsystem for adding color Windows SideShow displays to notebook computers, along with PortalPlayer's world-class multimedia playback technology. Windows SideShow will be driven by mini-applications running on a PC, such as such as Microsoft Vista gadgets that can retrieve critical data from hard drives or online information sources, which are then rendered on the secondary Preface subsystem. These applications are expected to provide instant access to critical personal information and business information like contacts, maps, stock quotes or other data, even when the notebook computer is turned off.

With Preface and Windows Vista, PortalPlayer and its partners can enable new generations of power efficient notebooks with new convenience, connectivity and entertainment value. For more information on Preface, visit http://portalplayer.com/preface.
