Google calls for LatAm countries to up VC investment in internet

(BNamericas.com Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Latin American countries need to step up their venture capital investment if they are to take advantage of the maximum possibilities the internet offers, according to Vinton Cerf, vice president of US internet search company Google (Nasdaq: GOOG).

Speaking at the "Internet in the World" conference in Mexico, Cerf called on Latin Americans to "work and take risks" with more funds from banks and other financial instruments to bring new applications to the internet market, Spanish news service EFE reported.

Cerf, who is considered one of the fathers of internet, pointed out that the Netherlands has given its economy a huge boost over the last decade thanks to substantial investment in this area.

He highlighted Mexico's potential to develop its energy and telecommunications infrastructure, as well as internet incubators, and expand those services abroad.

"Mexico can decide and focus on those opportunities. But it is going to have to do it centering on all those areas that require infrastructure," Cerf said.
