Goodwill Industries Teams With Electronic Recyclers to Provide Consumers More Free Locations to Unload Unwanted E-Waste

FRESNO, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- May 24, 2006 -- Goodwill Industries of San Joaquin Valley, in an innovative move, has announced it's teaming with Fresno-based Electronic Recyclers to expand upon a program where consumers can drop off unwanted computer monitors and televisions for free at all regional Goodwill donation sites.

Goodwill is authorized by the State of California to collect computer monitors, laptops, and televisions and Electronic Recyclers is authorized by the State to physically recycle the items, so the teaming of the two organizations made sense to both.

Goodwill, Electronic Recyclers and the State of California hope the partnership will be a winning situation for everyone: California consumers can conveniently and safely dispose of household electronics, Goodwill and Electronic Recyclers are reimbursed for their costs, and Californians can be reassured that potentially harmful electronic by-products are not entering the State's landfills or being shipped elsewhere.

"The concept of recycling is obviously meaningful to us at Goodwill," said Gerry Latasa, Goodwill's Director of Operations. "Electronic waste is a growing problem that affects the environment, and in terms of shipping toxic waste to landfills in other countries, it's a human rights issue as well. We took the partnership concept very seriously and investigated a lot of places that recycle electronic waste. Electronic Recyclers in Fresno is the one place where we could see that they really do things right and by the book."

"We are so proud to be partnered with Goodwill," said John S. Shegerian, President and CEO of Electronic Recyclers. "They have done so much for the people of this community and communities all around the world -- transforming lives and bringing tangible help to so many. They are a prestige organization and I am honored to be associated with them. I look forward to the good works we will be doing together -- keeping the toxins from electronic waste out of landfills."

Individuals who want to dispose of their used computers, laptops or televisions for free may take them to any Goodwill store or donation site in Stockton, Lodi, Manteca, Tracy, Modesto, Turlock, Merced, Fresno, Clovis and Visalia. Goodwill also accepts cell phones and ink jet cartridges. Hours of collection are generally 8:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. with shortened hours on Sundays.

The largest recycler of electronic waste in the State of California, Fresno-headquartered Electronic Recyclers is licensed to de-manufacture, recycle and crush the cathode ray tubes found in computer monitors, televisions and other types of video equipment.
