Telsur, GTD eyeing digital TV


(BNamericas.com Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Chilean telecoms operators Telefnica del Sur and GTD Manquehue are interested in entering the digital television market, local press reported.

Telefnica del Sur (Telsur), covering regions VIII and XI in the south of Chile, plans to launch the service during the second half of 2006, expanding the scale of operations during 2007. For this project, the company is estimating investments of US$15mn during 2006.

Telsur launched trials for television over ADSL in 2005, and already has 100 clients using and testing the service and the fiber optic networks. The company has also been participating in the satellite television market in alliances with Sky and Direct TV.

GTD is analyzing the market potential and investments required to launch a similar project. The company has agreements with DirecTV and triple play services provider VTR to provide television services.
