Vangard Voice Systems' CEO Judges 2006 Stradling Yocca Carlson & Rauth Business Plan Competition; Students, Faculty and Researchers Compete at the Paul Merage School of Business Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, UC Irvine

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- May 9, 2006 -- Vangard Voice Systems Inc., a pioneering provider of software for integrating speech into mobile device applications, today announced Bob Bova, CEO and president, will participate as a judge at this year's "Stradling Yocca Carlson & Rauth Business Plan Competition." The competition is hosted by the Paul Merage School of Business and the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University of California, Irvine (UC Irvine). Participants include students, faculty, researchers and graduates from a broad range of disciplines across the UC Irvine.

"This is one of the premier business plan competitions in the country, and I am honored to take part in judging," Bova said. "It is exciting to be part of a competition that encourages the entrepreneurial spirit that thrives here in Southern California."

"We are pleased to have Mr. Bova participate and share his expertise," said Bruce Feuchter, partner and member of the executive committee for Stradling Yocca Carlson & Rauth. "This competition and subsequent business ventures would not be possible without the coaches and judges who donate their valuable time volunteering."

In March 2006, UCI announced the competition's 19 finalist teams, which includes six teams composed of undergraduates from all disciplines and 13 teams competing as graduates. As of May 1, 16 teams submitted business plans and will be judged on May 19. Of this field, six will be awarded cash prizes totaling more than $25,000. The prizes will be announced at the finals at the Beckman Center on the UC Irvine campus.

Last year Orange County-based law firm Stradling Yocca Carlson & Rauth became the competition's sponsor, which made cash prizes possible for the winners and expanded opportunities for cross-campus cross-discipline team development. The eight-year-old campuswide competition, run by the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the Paul Merage School of Business, UC Irvine, is a five-month program that consists of seven business-plan-development workshops and provides individual coaches to all the teams that make the finals.

Bova's entrepreneurial experience forming successful startups spans 20 years. Prior to founding Vangard Voice Systems, Bova, as CEO, ran Enfotec Inc., a secure networking company through funding, acquisition and a public offering; created the Secure Networking Division at U.S. Bank/Oliver Allen Corp., which grew to over $12 million in revenues within two years; was on the initial team that started the ISG division (SSL Technology) at Rainbow Technologies, which grew to $56 million in revenues in just over three years; and established the Asita Technologies organization in the Pacific Rim and North America. He has also consulted with more than a dozen startup companies in Southern California, and is a member of OCTANe, an organization dedicated to accelerating the growth of the technology business in Orange County and surrounding areas. Bova holds an MBA in marketing from National University and a bachelor's degree from Syracuse University.
