Sony to keeps PlayStation 3 prices low to stay competitive+
(Japan Economic Newswire Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)LOS ANGELES, May 8_(Kyodo) _ Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. said Monday its PlayStation 3 game console, which will hit world markets in November, will retail for about 59,800 yen in Japan, $499 in the United States and 499 euros in Europe.
Although the new game machine is based on the technologically superior but expensive Blu-ray Disc format, the company apparently is trying to keep the price competitive against rival products such as Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 and Nintendo Co.'s Wii, which is due to debut later this year.
The Xbox 360 has a suggested retail price of 37,900 yen, excluding tax, in Japan.
The new PlayStation, which is slated to hit the Japanese market on Nov. 11, will come in two models. One features a 20-gigabyte hard disk drive, and the other a 60-gigabyte drive. The 20-gigabyte model will retail for 59,800 yen, while the price of the larger-capacity console has not been announced.
The new machines will hit the shelves in the United States and Europe on Nov. 17.
Sony Computer also unveiled a newly designed controller for PlayStation 3. Although the controller looks similar to conventional types, a user can move the device in all directions to control an image on the screen without using levers or buttons.
"The smooth operation of the controller should make it possible to play more innovative games," said Ken Kutaragi, president of Sony Computer.
Sony Computer made the announcement prior to the Electronic Entertainment Expo to be held this week in Los Angeles.
