Lion, Others Discover Lactoferin Helps Improve Periodontal Disease

(Comtex Health Care Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Tokyo, Japan, Apr 28, 2006 (JCN Newswire via COMTEX) --Lion has elucidated a mechanism of gum damage in periodontal disease in collaboration with GeneticLab and Tokyo Medical and Dental University.

The three partners have used gene analysis to discover that lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a periodontal pathogen, reduces the level of collagen in the gum tissue and breaks the tissue down.

Further, they have confirmed that lactoferin (LF), a kind of multifunctional protein found in milk and breast milk, can detoxify LPS so that it helps control the development of periodontal disease.

Details of the research will be presented at the 49th Annual Meeting in Spring for the Japanese Society of Periodontology scheduled on April 28 and 29.
