Lightning wreaks havoc in the city

(Malay Mail Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)PETALING JAYA: When quality control supervisor Zuraidah Ahmad had lunch with her husband yesterday, it never crossed her mind that it would be their last meal together.

Construction site supervisor Rezman Bujang, 32, was killed by lightning while taking shelter in a shed at Padang Timur yesterday at 3.45pm.

Rezman was on his way to work at Sungai Buloh with his two Indonesian colleagues when it started to rain heavily.

The lightning struck while they were in the shed.

Rezman died on the spot while his colleagues were injured.

Zuraidah said she met her husband for lunch at 12.30pm with their two children, seven-year-old Natasha and four-year-old Mohd Haikal at their flat in Kampung Datuk Harun.

"We always dined together since we both work nearby," said Zuraidah when met at the University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) mortuary.

Zuraidah was accompanied by her two children and her siblings.

She was married to Rezman for seven years.

She said that before Rezman left for work he told Natasha to study hard.

Zuraidah received a telephone call from Rezman's colleague at 4pm informing her that Rezman has had an accident.

"I was terrified and expected the worst.

My fears came true when I saw his body on the ground when I arrived at the scene of the incident," said Zuraidah.

Rezman's body was sent to the UMMC mortuary while his Indonesian colleagues were admitted to the hospital with severe injuries.

They are reported to be in stable condition.

The thunderstorm yesterday afternoon also caused havoc in various parts of Kuala Lumpur.

Vehicles were stalled in flood waters which hit Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Jalan Maharajalela, Jalan Loke Yew, the Sungai Besi roundabout and Jalan Bangsar.

A Datuk's three-storey bungalow in Damansara Heights was set ablaze by lighting at 3.30pm.

The bungalow, belonging to Gamuda Holdings director, Datuk Yeop Ishak, caught fire when lightning struck and caused a short circuit in a bedroom.

Within minutes, the house was in flames.

Yeop, 73, was told of the incident by his one of his four housemaids.

Yeop's wife, former senior police officer Datuk Zakiah Laidin, their son Hasni, daughter-in-law and four grandchildren were in the house during the incident.

Forty-eight firemen in eight fire engines from the Jalan Hang Tuah, Sentul and Sri Hartamas Fire and Rescue Department stations battled the blaze.

It is learnt that about 80 per cent of the third floor was destroyed.
