SKIPPER ASLEEP WHEN BOAT GROUNDED IN TORY CHANNEL
(New Zealand Press Association Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Wellington April 21 NZPA - The skipper of a fishing boat who was asleep when the boat grounded in the Marlborough Sounds earlier this week could face prosecution, Maritime New Zealand says.
Nelson-based The Venture grounded in the Tory Channel in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
The skipper, who is also the owner, was asleep at the time and did not report the accident to the Marlborough Harbour Master immediately.
Maritime New Zealand spokesman Steve Corbett told NZPA the the skipper admitted to being asleep and was cooperating fully with investigations. Marlborough deputy Harbour Master Jean Naude said the 13m vessel, which had three men aboard, grounded on rocks in Te Rua Bay opposite Clay Point in Tory Channel, just after midnight on Tuesday.
The crew were not injured and the boat only had minor damage to the hull.
Mr Naude he was unaware of the accident until 7.20am when the master of the Interisland ferry Arahura reported seeing the boat aground. Mr Corbett said Maritime NZ and the marine industry recognised fatigue as a risk to safety at sea and they had guidelines to help deal with it.
``We'll be having a close look at his actions leading up to and including the grounding. It's a bit early to say what consequences he may be looking at, that depends on what we find -- it could be any of the range of options that are open to us. Prosecution is at the top end of it.
`` We should be able to get some good learning out of the case. It seems a pretty clear case of fatigue but we'll see if what happens matches up with our guidelines to prevent this kind of thing,'' Mr Corbett said.
