Trade: Int'l Food Expo to Kick off in Hanoi in May

(Vietnam News Briefs Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)from the VIETNAM NEWS BRIEFS, March 20, 2006 About 200 Vietnamese and foreign businesses will participate in the International Fair of Food and Farm Produce Processing, Packaging and Preserving to be held in Hanoi from May 9-12

At the fair, businesses will show state-of-the-art machines, production systems and equipment as well as share experiences in processing, packaging and preserving farm produce and food

According to the Department for Farm Produce Processing and Salt Production, every 50 households in the country have a processing machine, a low rate compared to other countries in the region. Additionally, farm produce processing establishments mainly use backward technology and, consequently, cannot turn out high-quality products

Department Director Bach Quoc Khang said even though Vietnam is a major exporter of farm produce, its export revenues remain limited because over 80 percent of the country's exports are unprocessed agricultural products

Given this, the exposition is expected to provide a good opportunity for Vietnamese enterprises to expand cooperation and renew technology so as to further improve the quality of agricultural exports and obtain US$6 billion in export revenues this year
