France wants to sign ASEAN nonaggression pact, Malaysia says+

(Japan Economic Newswire Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)PUTRAJAYA, Malaysia, April 18_(Kyodo) _ France would like to accede to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations nonaggression pact, Malaysian Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar said Tuesday.

"France has written to us to say that they are willing to sign the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation," he told reporters, adding ASEAN welcomes it.

The issue will be discussed at the ASEAN foreign ministers meeting in Bali, Indonesia on Wednesday.

"I think we will be approving. There has been no objection," Syed Hamid said.

The treaty, adopted by ASEAN in 1976 and since amended to allow countries outside the region to join, commits signatories to noninterference in the internal affairs of one another; renunciation of the threat or use of force; and settlement of disputes by peaceful means.

Australia was the latest to join the treaty, which is a prerequisite to join the East Asia Summit.

The treaty's stated purpose is to "promote perpetual peace, everlasting amity and cooperation among their peoples, which would contribute to their strength, solidarity and a closer relationship."

ASEAN consists of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
