LEAD: Tokyo's unmanned transit system suspended due to train car trouble+
(Japan Economic Newswire Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)TOKYO, April 14_(Kyodo) _ (EDS: ADDING MALFUNCTION REPORT SHORTLY BEFORE THE ACCIDENT)
Train services of the Yurikamome Line, an unmanned transit system that connects Tokyo's Shimbashi Station with waterfront areas along Tokyo Bay, were suspended Friday evening after a six-car train was stalled due to a broken axle, the operator of the train services said.
The train, which was bound for Shimbashi Station from Toyosu Station, came to a halt near Fune-no-kagakukan Station at around 5:05 p.m., the operator of the Tokyo Waterfront New Transit System said. None of the 150 passengers aboard were injured.
The operator said it gave up resuming the services for the day following the accident, which affected about 30,000 passengers.
The operator said the accident occurred after an axle of a car of the train was damaged for unspecified reasons and the wheel came off. A malfunction in a speed controller was reported three minutes before the accident, which forced the train to stop temporarily, the operator said.
The Aircraft and Railway Accidents Investigation Commission of the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Ministry earlier sent three officials to the accident site to investigate its cause.
Yurikamome is operated by computer without conductors and drivers, and its trains with rubber tires run on elevated tracks.
The Yurikamome started operating in November 1995. Its operator is 67.7 percent owned by the Tokyo metropolitan government.
