Thailand: UN official praises Thai efforts to control bird flu

(Thai Press Reports Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Section: General News - Senior United Nations System Coordinator for Avian and Human Influenza David Nabarro has praised Thailand for its strong efforts in combating bird flu.

Nabarro, who is a senior public health expert in the World Health Organisation (WHO), said the UN would apply lessons learned in Thailand to several other nations. Measures implemented in Thailand could be used elsewhere to cope with the bird flu ciris.

Nabarro and his entourage met interim Thai Deputy Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and senior officials in Bangkok on April 10 to share information and discuss Thailand's success in containing the spread of the H5N1 bird flu virus, the Thai News Agency (TNA) reported.

The WHO expert said he hoped Thailand would continue its cooperation with the international community in fighting the virus.

He urged all countries to take preventive measures against the disease; otherwise it could be too late to prevent significant damage to their economies.

Thailand has reported 22 human cases of bird flu since 2004, of whom 14 had died and the remainder had recovered from the illness, according to the Thai Epidemiology Bureau. - VNA
