Six school children die, 15 hurt in Afghan rocket attack+

(Japan Economic Newswire Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)KABUL, April 11_(Kyodo) _ Six primary school children were killed and more than a dozen wounded when a rocket hit their school on Tuesday in eastern Afghanistan, an official said.

The attack was 20 kilometers east of Asadabad, the capital of Konar Province, Mohammad Hassan Farhi, deputy provincial police chief, said by telephone.

"Six children were killed and up to 15 were wounded as a rocket hit Salar Abad primary school," he said, adding that a second rocket fired at the school missed the target and hit open ground nearby.

He said the rockets were fired from within the border area between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The school is reportedly located near an allied military base.

Konar Province has seen violence in the past, mainly because remnants of the Taliban and renegade Islamic Party leader Gulbuddin Ekmatyar are reportedly active in the area.
