Shanghai to Increase Broadband Width to 46Mbps by 2010

(SinoCast Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)SHANGHAI, Apr 07, 2006 (SinoCast via COMTEX) --Shanghai, one of the fastest-developing cities in China, plans to increase theInternet access speed via broadband to 46Mbps by 2010, in order to greatly promote the online services around the themes of e-medical treatment, e-education, e-entertainment, and e-exhibition.



The city will invest CNY 400 million (USD 1 = CNY 8.04) in the program of the four online services and e-medical treatment service will likely be available as earliest as this summer. According to the schedule of China's high-performance broadband information network program, families in Shanghai will enjoy a stable download speedat 46Mbps in 2010, far higher than 512Kbps that are widelyused at present.

Li Yi, head of the broadband center of Shanghai, reveals that the higher broadband width will be the base for the development of the digital services like long-distance medical treatment, virtual lab, and virtual museum. By 2010, every family in Shanghai will watch a high-definition TV channel, which will need broadband width of 25Mbps, and two standard-definition TV channels, which will share broadband width of 7Mbps each. At the same time, they will enjoy an Internet access speed no less than 8Mbps.
