Sixth company joins WEEE collection effort in Hungary

(Hungarian News Agency Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Budapest, April 4, 2006 (MTI-ECONEWS) - A sixth public benefit company has been set up to collect waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) in Hungary, as required by an EU directive, Rezso Berenczei, who heads the company, called Comp-Cord Elektromos Hulladekkezelo Koordinacios, announced on Tuesday.

Under an EU directive, all member states must collect at least 4 kilogrammes of WEEE per capita by 2009. Between 50pc and 80pc of this waste, depending on the type, must be recycled. The cost of collection and recycling is covered by electronics manufacturers, which usually pay another party to coordinate the activity. In Hungary there were five companies set up to coordinate the activity in August 2005, when legislation enforcing the directive was announced.

Hungary committed to collecting 10,000 tonnes of WEEE in 2005 and 20,000 tonnes in 2006. Already in 2005, 15,000 tonnes was collected, equivalent to 9pc of the weight of sales of new electronic equipment. In 2006, WEEE weighing the same as 17pc of sales of new equipment will be collected.

Comp-Cord expects to collect 1,000-2,000 tonnes of WEEE in 2006, and it plans to recycle 55pc of this in a partnership with Inter-Metal, the first company to dispose of WEEE in Hungary.

Inter-Metal collected 2,800 tonnes of WEEE last year, but the company expects to increase this 60pc after a capacity expansion in 2500, according to Ervin Tihanyi, in charge of WEEE collection at the company. WEEE recycled last year came in equal part from companies and households.

Inter-Metal, which has a waste collection unit, a recycling unit and a haulage unit, employs 100.

Inter-Metal had consolidated revenue of HUF 6bn, up from HUF 5.4bn in 2004. Pre-tax profits came to HUF 160m in 2005. In 2006, the company expects profits of HUF 150-170m.

Inter-Metal employs 100 workers.
