Ganguly back in limelight(Gulf News Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Dubai: Was Sourav Ganguly a victim of the business link between Indian chief selector Kiran More and coach Greg Chappell? Several members in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are gearing up to demand an inquiry into the alleged business arrangement between More and Chappell, as they feel that Ganguly has been made a 'scapegoat'. An Indian newspaper has revealed that More has been sending players from his private coaching academy in Vadodara to Chappell's Australian International Sports Academy (AISA). The academy, called 'The Chappell Way', charges a fee of Rs 90,000 (Dhs 8,000 approx) per player. Many feel that Ganguly's strong stance in selection matters would not have allowed both More and Chappell to meet their objectives of helping each other. A study of the sequence of events that led to the ouster of Ganguly makes one feel that Chappell and More had joined hands to oust Ganguly. It seems More has followed Chappell's instructions and eased Ganguly out of the captaincy and then the team. Once More got rid of Ganguly, Chappell has been able to have his say in selection matters and even act like a dictator. The question being asked by a section of the BCCI members is that when More and Chappell are holding such important positions, why did they not reveal their business links to the BCCI? "It is a shame that both of them, holding important positions, were trying to make some quick money on the side," remarked a BCCI member. When Chappell gave an interview to an England- based newspaper that Ganguly hung on to the captaincy for financial gains, the BCCI let him off by asking Chappell not to make repeat such statements. Meanwhile, More has repeatedly said that Ganguly has no place in the team in the present scenario. It should be recalled that More had got Abhjit Kale, a promising player, banned after revealing that Kale had offered him a bribe for selection to the Indian team a few years back. The April 9 BCCI Working Committee meeting in Mumbai is likely to be a stormy one. Will More and Chappell come clean or will a compromise be reached by selecting Ganguly for the West Indies tour? |
