India receives uranium from Russia(UPI Top Stories Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)India received its first shipment from Russia of 20-to-25 metric tons of enriched uranium fuel to supply two units of the Tarapur Atomic Power Station. Tarapur was built in the western state of Maharashtra by General Electric in the 1960s, Mosnews.com reported, but the United States halted uranium supplies after India conducted nuclear tests in 1974 and refused to sign the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. TAPS I and II, which were shut down in October 2005, were reconnected to the Western Grid on February 16 after undergoing renovation, modernization and safety upgrade, reported the Press Trust of India. The current uranium shipment would last eight months in one unit and 18 months in the other, the Press Trust of India news agency reported. A second shipment of 40-to-45 tons is expected soon, Mosnews.com said. With Russian supply of 60 metric tons of uranium, the plants will have fuel for the next five years and run smoothly, said Singh Thakur, an officer with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India. |
