Scots in Pole position to snap up new cheap flights Budget airline unveils new routes

(Evening Times Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)A THIRD new flight route to Poland in just two days is putting the eastern European country on the map for Scots tourists.

Ryanair today announced it is to fly to Wroclaw, in the south-west of the country, with prices starting at GBP5.49.

The move comes a day after Wizz Air launched two routes from Prestwick Airport, to hip seaside town Gdansk and historic capital Warsaw.

Tourist chiefs say Wroclaw's main claims to fame are its marvellous town square and its Gothic architecture but its retail centres will also attract Glasgow's shopaholics.

The Dominikanska Gallery is in the heart of the city, while several others out of town offer free transportation from the city centre.

Wroclaw also hosts a list of international cultural events, such as music, theatre and film festivals, concerts and open-air shows.

Announcing the new route in Glasgow today, Ryanair's Karl Hogstadius said: "We will have three departures a week offering an easy escape to the west of Poland and for the first year we expect to carry at least 40,000 passengers on the route.

"Wroclaw is a bustling town which offers cheap shopping, great night life and a rich cultural heritage."

Ryanair's new route, from Prestwick, will begin in August.

The boom in routes to Poland has come about partly because of the influx of Polish workers to Scotland.

More than 12,000 people are thought to have arrived since May 2004, when the former Eastern Bloc country's entry into the European Union meant its workers were allowed free access to the British labour market.

Last November Ryanair launched Scotland's first air link to Poland with its service to Krakow, in the south of the country.

At Prestwick yesterday, the first Wizz Air flights - announced in January - set off for Warsaw and Gdansk.

The Hungary-based firm's inaugural flight from Warsaw touched down in Scotland with 102 passengers, who were greeted by bagpipes.

The passengers on the first flights - which cost from GBP20 including taxes - were mainly Polish workers and students.

Scotland's only flights to Pakistan are to go non-stop.

Pakistan International Airlines today began serving Lahore direct from Glasgow Airport without making a stop-over in Dubai.
