Japan eyes practical use of ultra wideband wireless system in fall+

(Japan Economic Newswire Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)TOKYO, March 27_(Kyodo) _ The communications ministry said Monday it will put into practical use this fall the ultra wideband wireless system that enables indoor data transmission at five times the speed of the fiber-optic communication system.

Although its range is only about 10 meters, the ultra wideband wireless system is expected to improve the communication environment at home, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications said.

With a transmission speed of up to 500 megabits per second, the system will allow the recording of more than two high-definition television programs at the same time, the ministry said.

It would also allow sending images recorded by a high-quality digital video camera to a number of home information appliances such as personal computers and printers, according to the ministry.

The ministry also plans to inaugurate a high-speed wireless local area network as early as next spring, it said, adding that the network will offer full-time access to the Internet at a speed of 100 mbps, almost the same as for fiber optical data transmission.
