Asia-Pacific countries to set up forum on water-related issues+

(Japan Economic Newswire Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)MEXICO CITY, March 21_(Kyodo) _ Ministers from Asia-Pacific countries agreed Monday to create a water forum to address water-related problems such as a drinking water shortage, sanitation and water-induced disasters.

The ministerial meeting was held on the fringes of the fourth World Water Forum that started last Thursday in Mexico City for six days.

The creation of the water forum was in response to a proposal made by nonprofit organization Japan Water Forum, headed by former Japanese Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto.

The ministers also agreed to hold a water summit in the Asia-Pacific region every three years.

Heads of states, leaders of major business corporations and chiefs of local governments in the region will gather to deal with various water-related problems.

An estimated 678 million people living in Asia are without improved drinking water and over 1.9 billion people in the region live without access to improved sanitation, the ministers said in a written message.
