FLO Forum Approves Device and Transmitter Performance
Forum Welcomes Nine New Member Companies
FREMONT, CA Mar. 16, 2006 The FLO Forum, an association of wireless industry leaders focused on the standardization of FLO Technology, today announced the ratification of several key technical specifications developed by its Test and Certification Committee. The technical and performance requirements captured in the documents assure interoperability and compatibility for FLOTM based terrestrial mobile multimedia multicast devices and transmitters. The specifications are companion documents to the previously ratified FLOTM Air Interface Specification (AIS), which was submitted to the TIA TR47.1 subcommittee at its January 2006 meeting. The newly approved documents are:
FLO Device Minimum Performance Specification Rev. 1.0
FLO Transmitter Minimum Performance Specification Rev. 1.0
FLO Test Application Protocol Specification Rev. 1.0
The Minimum Performance Specifications (MPS) include complete descriptions of the attributes and evaluation metrics in the form of test cases with numerical thresholds for the minimum performance of FLO transmitters and FLO devices. The successful completion of the test cases assures compatibility with the radio interface described in the FLOTM AIS.
The FLO Test Application Protocol Specification describes a set of procedures for testing the FLO device and the FLO network in a factory/laboratory environment. It also allows measurement of certain FLO performance parameters in a field environment.
The industry representatives on the test and certification committee have worked together to create a minimum performance specification for companies seeking to manufacture transmitters that can be used in a FLO mobile multimedia network. This specification will help assure equipment interoperability and simplify the task of implementing a FLO network, said David Glidden, director TV strategy and mobile TV, Broadcast Communications Division of Harris Corporation.
New FLO Forum Members
Nine new member companies have joined the FLO Forum, bringing the total membership to 33. About FLO Technology
FLO technology is a new air interface with multicasting capabilities designed to increase capacity and reduce content delivery costs to mobile handsets. FLO technology enables mobile users to see and hear a variety of relevant content for the mobile consumer.
Designed from the ground up specifically to multicast significant volumes of rich multimedia content, FLO enables wireless operators to cost-effectively deliver clips and streaming video to millions of mobile users at once. FLO provides the technology for distributing multimedia content efficiently and economically without impacting current networks.
About the FLO Forum
The FLO Forum is a multi-company initiative committed to advancing the global standardization of FLO technology. Composed of industry-leading organizations, the FLO Forum works to develop products and services, based on FLO technology, to enable the delivery of advanced multimedia services to wireless consumers. The FLO Forum is organized to promote the global standardization of FLO technology, including compliance and certification benchmarks for the technology.
