Murdoch brings MySpace to UK

(Business, The (London) (KRT) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Mar. 5--Rupert Murdoch's internet service MySpace is planning a UK launch as the next front in his battle with Microsoft for dominance of the web entertainment market.

Based in small offices in Santa Monica, MySpace was bought by News Corporation in September when it acquired MySpace's parent company Intermix media in a $580m (324m, E470m) cash buyout.

MySpace has never marketed itself in the UK, but has attracted an estimated 2m UK users, according to a source close to the company.

The UK appeal is only part of what is rapidly becoming a global phenomenon. According to research firm Comscore Media Metrix, MySpace had more page views in November than Google or eBay. According to Nielsen/NetRating, MySpace attracted 24.5m unique visitors in November.

Each day, the service is estimated to attract about 170,000 new members. A source close to the company also claimed MySpace attracts 10 percent of all online advertising.

More crucially for Murdoch, MySpace, launched on a shoestring in January 2004, is the latest internet craze among the 16-30 age group, which is expected to be the first to embrace internet television when it is launched this year.

MySpace allows users to post pictures and videos as well as communicate with each other via text. It is rapidly replacing Microsoft's instant messaging as the preferred online communication medium for teenagers.

MySpace has also been used to launch bands such as Arctic Monkeys, which last month sold 360,000 copies of its CD.

When the internet and television services converge later this year, Murdoch's satellite service will start to look extremely dated and he will need a way of addressing an online audience to offer TV, film and video services over the internet. MySpace would be the perfect portal for this purpose.
