Man injured in bomb blast in western Turkey(Comtex Community Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)ANKARA, Mar 4, 2006 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- A man was wounded when a makeshift bomb went off near a police station in the western Turkish city of Izmir on Saturday, the semi-official Anatolia news agency reported. The bomb, planted in a wheelbarrow, detonated near a police station in the Kurds-dominated Konak district of Izmir, Turkey's third largest city, according to the report. A 54-year-old man was wounded in the blast, which also smashed windows of nearby buildings and damaged some vehicles, Anatolia said, adding that the police suspected the outlawed Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) might be behind the explosion. The PKK, vowing to fight for Kurdish independence in southeastern Turkey, has launched a series of attacks in Turkey since it called off a five-year unilateral ceasefire in June 2004. More than 30,000 people have been killed in the conflict between the two sides since 1984. |
