Fishing trip tragedy

(Manchester Evening News Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)THE family of a keen fisherman and scuba diver who drowned on a winter break in India have paid tribute to a man who "lived life to the full".

Ronald Stuart, 62, from Mossley, Tameside, disappeared while fishing off Anjuna beach in Goa on October 18 last year. His body was recovered from the water and a post-mortem examination in India revealed he had died from drowning.

A second post-mortem by a British doctor came to the same conclusion. At an inquest at Stockport, Coroner John Pollard recorded a verdict of accidental death. He said: "There is sufficient evidence to conclude the nature of his death was due to drowning and there is no suggestion of anything untoward. It was a sad and tragic accident."

Mr Stuart, who was born in India, returned to Britain at the age of 16 and, after settling in Mossley he began working as a welder.

He then worked as an engineer, until an accident in Paris left him disabled. He retired and moved in 2001 to Alicante in Spain, where he learnt to scuba dive. He had travelled to Goa for the last 12 years to enjoy the climate and because it reminded him of his childhood.

After the inquest, his eldest son Wayne, along with brothers Craig and Matthew, said: "He was one of the lads and was full of life.

"We used to call him Peter Pan, because he was more active than we are and always lived life to the full. "We take comfort from the fact he died doing what he loved and if he had to go, then fishing on a beach in India was where he would have chosen."
