Italy sacks Cabinet minister for wearing Prophet Mohammad T-shirt+
(Japan Economic Newswire Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)ROME, Feb. 18_(Kyodo) _ Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said Friday he will dismiss Roberto Calderoli, a Cabinet minister who wore a T-shirt featuring cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammad that have triggered protests around the world, media reports said.
In Libya, nine people were killed in a clash with police while demonstrating at the Italian consulate in Benghazi, according to the Associated Press.
Italian Reform and Devolution Minister Roberto Calderoli told an interview Tuesday with ANSA news agency that he would begin wearing the T-shirt and showed that he was wearing it under his shirt on television the following day.
He is a member of the Northern League party, which advocates limiting immigration.
The clash in Libya took place during a demonstration by more than 1,000 people, but the AP said it is not known if it was triggered by the T-shirt.
The Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten first published the cartoons last September. Some Western newspapers have reprinted them.
