PMI Con 2005

India gains from the vision of Project Mangement Institute's Global Leaders

The future and destiny of the entire planet particularly Asia Pacific Region resides in India Nothing more could be said about the importance of India as future super power by Gregory Balestrero chair person of PMI 2005 on his first visit to India when he inaugurated the Project Management Congress in Delhi.

PMI Con 2005 themed Achieving India Inc. Objectives with Project Management Excellence was organized by PMI North India Chapter. The congress started with a welcome note by Mr. Upendra Giri PMP © and keynote address by Mr. Gregory Balestrero, CEO, PMI. The congress was attended by nearly 400 participants and sponsored by all the big names in the industry like IBM, Primavera and Microsoft among many others.

For Mr. Balestrero and Mr. Fraser, their first visit to India could not be more momentous than inaugurating a congress which had such a diverse and influential gathering of both speakers and participants, like PMI Con 2005. This experience was aptly brought forward when Mr. Balestrero stated that it was like coming to a chapter conference only to find out that it was more than a global congress!!.

Acknowledging the focus of PMI on India Mr. Balestrero, stated that With six times the number of scientists and engineers, all eyes are on India Mr. Balestrero who has been entrusted by PMI to spread the light of Project Management across the globe, came to India with an objective of disseminating his knowledge to see India achieve the status of a world power. And this was a dream come true for everyone particularly Mr. Upendra Giri president of PMI North India Chapter, it were his effort and relentless perseverance to give something back to his motherland that made him return from US and setup a base in India. The base which later gave foundation to spreading the light of project management in India, it were these efforts of Mr. Giri which were also acknowledged by Mr. Balestrero when he remarked, We owe it all to entrepreneurs like Upendra for not only setting the foundation but also of taking initiatives like this to give back more than what they have gained from their motherland. And that in all ways is what the discipline of Project Management teaches you.

Mr. Balestrero talked extensively on how India could achieve its goal of over all development and how project management could pave the road for it. Commenting on Prime Ministers stated objective of Bharat Nirman, Mr. Balestrero in his own words said, The achievement of this renewal can depend greatly on Indias adoption of Project Management. Elaborating further he quoted Rob Scheron, former VC of GE, Execution is a discipline and it has to be critical to strategy and further added, Strategy is not just the idea, or the creation of the idea. It has to be thought of in terms of an end which leads to change. Project management is a discipline that is integral to strategy and is the major task of any leader.

Mr. Balestrero concluded his address by saying that, All eyes are on India and the world has great hope from it. India represents the greatest opportunity for Project Management, if they can set a baseline for excellence in Project Management, it can help the country to deploy and create wealth. As it India propels towards its own R&D and development of its own intellectual property, and the economic engine continues to change, India would become one of the top world leaders deciding the future of this planet.

When asked by one of the participants about what the prime facilitators for project management were and how India could truly achieve excellence, Mr. Balestrero explained, Success can only be achieved when it is not okay for an organization to be over budget or behind schedule. The culture has to be re-oriented to change so that every level of the organization understands the critical importance of decision making process. Referring back to chaos chronicle studies ,started in mid 90s after the IT bubble had bursted around the globe, he added in the last three reports one of the top five reasons why a project is successful is because it enjoys strong executive sponsorship. One way by which India can achieve success is to study the failures it has had and the failures of other countries, ensuring that they are not repeated. This is where Project Management steps in by providing access to that knowledge, and tools to make such information useful.

On the second day of the congress the keynote was delivered by Mr. Brijesh Kumar, I.A.S., IT Secretary DIT, Government of India who talked extensively on the need of Project Management in India and also the practicalities associated with monitoring and evaluation of projects.

The congress featured a number of knowledge platforms which were very efficiently presided over by their respective moderators and had just the right mix of panelists both from tool side to concept side and also from the implementation angle.

The overall experience of those participating in the congress was that of increased knowledge of various intricacies associated with project management, and also a better understanding of how to partake and chip in for capability development of India Inc.

The second day was highlighted by sessions pertaining to case studies from all over India across all verticals, in order to give the project managers a holistic understanding of the best practices being followed in their respective domain. It also featured success stories like those of Karnataka State Police Housing Board which used the basic understanding of project management and not only delivered a large scale construction project on time but also developed their own customized tool for monitoring and control of their project.

The success and failure stories which were discussed by gurus in the field of project management in India gave the participants a much needed encouragement to go on and continuously strive for perfection in an on going effort to delivering their projects On time & in Budget. It gave them an understanding of the words of wisdom which were quite aptly put across by Mr. Himadri Banerjee CTS Reliance Energy, It is not always possible to be 100% successful in delivering projects, but what should be kept in mind are the lessons to be kept in mind of why the project failed. So the same are not repeated.

PMI Con 2005 was not only graced by the presence of PMI chair but also various dignitaries and key decision makers of the industry like
 Mr. J Satyanarayana, CEO, NISG
 John Vines, CEO of APESMA
Robert Jenkins, Chief Planning Monitoring & Evaluation UNICEF

Himadri Banerjee, CTS, Reliance Energy Ltd
 Mr. Shashank Ojha, World Bank

 Ms Katherine, IIL

PMI Con2005 was of an ongoing effort by PMI North India chapter to increase the awareness of project managent in India and to harness that awareness to fuel the growth of this country. To sum it all up the lessons learnt were many and the deliverable gained can just not be justified by putting them into words. What must be kept in mind is Mr. Ian Frasiers insight Success can only be achieved by putting the learning in practice, and that is the way of Project Management
