(BNamericas.com Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Online community website Orkut, owned by US internet search company Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), has become a "virtual paradise for criminals" in Brazil, according to Thiago Tavares of local non-profit organization Safernet.



Orkut, which has some 70% of its global registered users in Brazil, has become the most popular communication medium for criminals on Brazil's internet, local newspaper Estado de S.Paulo quoted Tavares as saying.

Although Turkish programmer Orkut Buyukkokten created the Orkut site with the altruistic aim of connecting people, the site has lost its innocence as crimes such as pedophilia and drug dealing have become common, the newspaper reported.

German business software maker SAP (NYSE: SAP) sees opportunities for growth in Latin America in the retail, financial services and public sectors, particularly the telecommunications sector, Computerworld Brazil reported SAP's Latin American regional director Jos Alberto Duarte as saying.

The company will also continue to focus on the SME segment. In Brazil SAP has already secured 18 clients for its Business One ERP starter suite for small companies since the launch of the product on November 22 last year.

Brazil continues to be the most important market for the company, representing 40% of SAP's revenues in the region, SAP Brasil CEO Jos Ruy Antunes said.

US security software provider Symantec (Nasdaq: SYMC) has appointed Christopher Cook as its marketing manager for Brazil, Reseller Web reported.

Cook comes from data storage company Veritas, which merged with Symantec in July last year, and worked in the public relations department.

Cook will be responsible for all activities related to business strategy, principally sales and channel partners as well as raising the profile of Symantec in Brazil.

Chilean copper company Codelco has chosen US web and enterprise content management (ECM) solutions provider RedDot to help improve the quality of content put on its web page, IT Web reported.

The corporate website called Portal Codelco is accessed by company employees.

"We ought to develop a methodology for publishing news that involves less steps and is more appropriate to our requirements," Codelco's communications director Ceclia Atria said.

US software security firm McAfee (NYSE: MFE) has appointed Mrcio Lebro as director and president of McAfee's Brazilian unit, Panorama Brasil reported.

Before taking on the new post Lebro was McAfee's sales director for three years. Lebro is expected to ensure that this year the company maintains the 25% growth rate seen in 2005.
