METI to let people test-drive fuel cell-powered cars+

(Japan Economic Newswire Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)OSAKA, Feb. 8_(Kyodo) _ The industry ministry plans to get people in Osaka Prefecture to test-drive fuel cell cars and try out fuel cell-powered wheelchairs in a five-year undertaking beginning in fiscal 2006, Osaka prefectural government officials said Tuesday.

The plan by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is to pave the way for fuel cell vehicles being applied for commercial use, the officials said.

The ministry will invite companies to file applications to manufacture fuel cell-powered cars and wheelchairs in the prefecture.

A few firms to be selected by the ministry will be tasked with soliciting applications from people at welfare facilities, including homes for the elderly, and selecting dozens of people to use fuel cell vehicles.

The ministry will set aside 300 million yen as part of the fiscal 2006 state budget to finance the experiment in the fiscal year to March 31, 2007, the first year of the five-year test.

A fuel cell car generates electricity through the chemical reaction of hydrogen in an on-board tank and oxygen the car takes in from the air.

The ministry will install hydrogen filling stations on the premises of the Osaka prefectural government and the Kansai international airport to enable the participants to fill up the on-board hydrogen tanks.

Separately, the ministry is also planning to help companies develop mobile phones and personal computers powered by fuel cells, ministry officials said. It estimates that the market for fuel cell-based products will be worth around 8 trillion yen in 2020.
