Dire predictions for NZ economy from National's Leader Don Brash in his annual scene-setting speech in Orewa

(IRN News Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)There have been dire predictions for the economy tonight from National's Leader Don Brash, in his annual scene-setting speech to the Orewa Rotary Club.

Dr Brash is predicting a recession, and blames the Clark-led Government for doing nothing about it - other than going on a public service spending spree.

Our Political Editor Barry Soper says it was a speech essentially that we've all heard before, but it struck the right note with the audience, even if predictions of a recession aren't exactly what what the doctor ordered.

Again Dr Brash highlighted the difference between Australia and New Zealand, the income disparity, 20 percent when labour came to power - now 33 percent.

Is there any wonder, he asked his audience, why Kiwis are heading across the Tasman for greener pastures?

He likened Helen Clark to an opossum caught in the headlights of an oncoming Aussie truck.

Dr Brash set out to dispel any notion that his job is up for grabs, telling his appreciative audience of around 200 that his goal is to be Prime Minister of a National-led government within the next three years.
