City Vietnamese switching holiday site
(Daily Oklahoman, The (KRT) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Jan. 26--Oklahoma City's Vietnamese community will welcome the Year of the Dog at a new location this year.
After about 10 years at the Coca-Cola Bricktown Event Center, this year's celebration of the lunar new year, known as Tet in Vietnam, will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at The Plaza Conference Center, 4345 Lincoln Blvd.
The new venue will accommodate almost as many people but at less cost to the Vietnamese-American Community of Oklahoma City, said Van Anderson, the community's spokesman.
More than 3,000 people attended Oklahoma City's Tet celebration last year. At the time of Census 2000, Oklahoma City's Vietnamese population -- those born in Vietnam plus their American-born children -- neared 10,000.
The community raises money for the free afternoon program by selling tickets to a New Year's Eve dance the same evening at the same location. Dance tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door.
As in previous years, the Tet celebration will include music, dragon dancers from Giac Quang Buddhist Temple, performances by members of the Viet Youth Today organization and a raffle.
The lunar new year, observed across Asia, falls on Jan. 29 this year.
