Ubiquity Finds Road to China with Huawei

Communications platform vendor Ubiquity Software has established its first significant presence in striking a new global partnership with Huawei Technologies, the networking equipment supplier that is considered the Cisco Systems of Asia.

While the deal gives Ubiquity virtually instant access to a powerful partner with huge market share, Huawei also stands to benefit from the agreement, analysts believe. While wireline and wireless operators alike are preparing to migrate their circuit-switched networks to next-generation packet technology, the network architecture for IP Multimedia Subsystems (IMS) is still evolving. With Ubiquity’s IMS SIP-based application server, Huawei gains an environment that is flexible enough to adapt quickly to the changing landscape.

“The architecture doesn’t say the product must be X-Y-Z. It’s important for each of the vendors in the space to have complementary partners,” explained Steve Raab, analyst at Dell’Oro Group. “It’s useful to both parties.”

Under the partnership arrangement, Ubiquity will incorporate its SIP Application Server as an embedded part of Huawei's IMS portfolio of products, where Huawei can provide tailor-made state-of-the-art End-to-End IMS solution to customers. Huawei is utilizing Ubiquity's Application Creation Environment to develop and deliver wireless, wireline and converged SIP-based applications to its customers worldwide who are service providers.

“They are the first public announcement of a partner in China. We've had a sales and business presence in Beijing and Shanghai for some time. But this is the first major partner in China,” said Jeff Liebl, VP of global marketing.

The first extended Ubiquity SIP A/S platform based application solution is expected to be generally available to customers later this year. Ubiquity is also enabling Huawei with IMS proof of concept applications such as video, gaming, chat and conferencing.
