Dolby Delivers a Record Quantity of LM100 Broadcast Loudness Meters to Discovery Communications
SAN FRANCISCO --(Business Wire)-- Oct. 26, 2005 -- Dolby Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE:DLB), delivered 87 Dolby(R) LM100 Broadcast Loudness Meters to Discovery Communications, which marks the largest single sale of the LM100 units to date. Since debuting in 2003, the Dolby LM100 Broadcast Loudness Meter has been purchased for use in more than 100 broadcast, postproduction, satellite uplink, and cable head-end facilities worldwide.
The Dolby LM100 provides postproduction, television broadcast, cable system, and satellite providers with advanced loudness measurement capabilities to address one of the most common problems in television broadcasting today: variance in the perceived loudness of programming.
Research conducted by Dolby indicates that television viewers often experience loudness variance of 15 decibels or more between programming, prompting them to adjust the volume to suit each program. Variation in loudness is currently one of the top complaints by viewers.
Discovery has made an unprecedented commitment to the audio quality of its programming by integrating the LM100 into its postproduction and quality control suites in the US. The devices will assist in maintaining consistency in audio throughout the Discovery facilities in both Silver Spring, Maryland, and Miami, as well as provide off-air loudness monitoring of broadcast programs.
"We are pleased to receive such a significant endorsement of our solution from Discovery, and are very proud of the cable industry's acceptance of the meter so far," said Tom Daily, Marketing Director, Professional Division, Dolby Laboratories. "Dolby is committed to enabling the best audio experience possible for television viewers, and providing easy-to-use, reliable products to broadcasters and content creators to help them achieve their goals."
"At Discovery, we want to present our viewers with the highest-quality viewing experience, which is why we've chosen to install numerous Dolby LM100 units," said Tony Cole, Vice President, Engineering, Discovery Communications. "This will enable us to deliver consistent audio loudness levels on all of our programs and to provide an improved real-world entertainment experience for our viewers."
The LM100 greatly simplifies program audio level measurement over and above currently available methods while also providing an increase in measurement accuracy. This new level of accuracy is achieved through the use of an innovative technology called Dialogue Intelligence(TM), which Dolby developed specifically to measure the perceived loudness of dialogue within broadcast programming, and to present the results in an easy-to-understand numerical format.
In 2004, Dolby Laboratories received a Primetime Emmy(R) Award for Outstanding Achievement in Engineering from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in recognition for contributions made by the development of the LM100 Broadcast Loudness Meter.
