Hynix Awards ESI Repeat Multiple-System Order for Model 9830 Semiconductor Link-Processing Systems; Laser-Systems Leader Becomes Supplier of Choice to Top Memory Maker

PORTLAND, Ore. --(Business Wire)-- Oct. 12, 2005 -- ESI (Nasdaq:ESIO), a leading provider of world-class production laser systems for microengineering applications, today announced it has received a repeat multiple-system order for its Model 9830 semiconductor link-processing tool from Korea's Hynix Semiconductor, Inc., one of the world's largest dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) producers. The latest in a succession of multiple 9830 purchases from Hynix over the past year, this order positions ESI as the memory maker's supplier of choice for laser link-processing systems. The 9830 tools will be used in the mass production of Hynix's 90nm 256MB and 512MB DRAMs, as well as NAND flash memories.

According to SokYoung Song, manager of the test infrastructure team for Hynix, "We have conducted extensive evaluations of ESI tools and those of its competitors, and found that the ESI Model 9830 systems not only meet our current needs, but provide a valuable upgrade path to ultraviolet (UV) laser processing technology. We have been pleased with the performance advantages the 9830 affords, and we look forward to a continued, lengthy relationship with ESI."

"This order represents an important milestone for ESI," noted ESI President and CEO Nick Konidaris. "Not only does this purchase denote a significant investment in our link-processing technology by a major, longtime customer, but it also illustrates the value these tools deliver to memory manufacturers such as Hynix. Feature-rich in itself, the 9830 is also fully compatible with our 9835 UV laser system, enabling customers to make that transition seamlessly and cost-effectively."

The Model 9830 is designed to meet the needs of high-volume 300mm-wafer manufacturing of DRAM, synchronous RAM (SRAM), embedded, flash and other memory applications. With its small spot size (optimized for the 1.3um wavelength) and wide performance window, the 9830 features a high-performance laser capable of processing tight-pitch metal fuses on 90nm semiconductor devices. Available options include a link-inspection system, which enables visual inspection of link blow quality using a built-in, high-resolution, color microscope; and a wafer-ID reading and illumination option that includes the company's ScribeView2(TM) patented programmable optical character-recognition (OCR) illumination subsystem.
