Kunze to run digital media unit at The Star
(Ventura County Star (CA) (KRT)) Nov. 25--John Kunze has been named director of digital media for the Ventura County Star.
Kunze came from Salt Lake City, where he was working at the Newspaper Agency Corp. as the new media operations manager.
Publisher Tim Gallagher said Kunze's technology experience is paired with a sense of how people really use Web sites and other media.
"He really understood the way consumers behave when they are in the digital world," he said.
A good product will attract advertising, Kunze said, and the content is excellent. At last count the site was getting about 3 million page views a month.
"I think there is huge room for growth in this marketplace," he said.
Kunze said his first priority is making the Web site completely functional.
Soon he would like to redesign the entire site to be a more digital experience as opposed to reproducing the newspaper online.
"I think newspapers need to think of themselves as more than newspapers; they need to think of themselves as media companies," Kunze said.
The Star has been expanding the scope of the department beyond the Web site. Gallagher said it is clear that, although newspapers are still very profitable, the future is in the broad range of digital media from the Internet to MP3 players and personal digital assistants.
More resources will be devoted to the digital media department as the Internet continues to change the business, Gallagher said. The company has made major changes like this before, and he said jobs will be modified and people will have to be retrained.
"The opportunity to grow is digitally," he said.
Kunze, 41, is a Camarillo native and said he always wanted to return home.
He has a degree in business administration from Weber State University in Utah.
