NEC enhances alliance with Stratus to develop fault-tolerant servers+


(Japan Economic Newswire)TOKYO, Nov. 25_(Kyodo) _ NEC Corp. said Friday it has reached a deal with Stratus Technologies Inc. of the United States to enhance their alliance to develop fault-tolerant servers by late 2006.

NEC will develop hardware for fault-tolerant servers, while the U.S. server maker will be responsible for software, NEC said. New fault-tolerant servers combining the two companies' technologies will be produced by NEC Computertechno Ltd. in Kofu, Yamanashi Prefecture.

NEC said it and Stratus Technologies will aim by fiscal 2008 ending in March 2009 to sell more than 20,000 fault-tolerant servers worldwide to banks, telecommunications companies and other firms engaged in mission-critical operations.

Under the latest agreement, NEC said, it will also invest $9 million in Stratus Technologies to expand its stake in the U.S. firm to some 3 percent. Their alliance started in 1989.
