School board eyes more effective use of technology

(The Post-Crescent)APPLETON -- For the last eight years, Appleton Area School District has concentrated on giving teachers and students access to technology and equipment.

Now the district is turning to a greater emphasis on accountability as to how technology is used as a learning tool, school technology administrators say.

The school board is expected to approve an information and technology plan on Monday that includes integrating technology into lessons and "cultivating technology point people in the buildings," said Dale Hanson, instructional technology director.

Hanson said more teachers have moved beyond PowerPoint presentations and are taking steps to become more interactive using laptops, internet connections and other technology to "blow the top off" the possibilities for enhancing instruction. He cited a high school advanced biology class that can hook up to open-heart surgery in Chicago as an example.

"The bottom line, to me," said board member Jeff Knezel, "is that teachers have to be willing to go along with this and work on this."
